Patrzcie, patrzcie... To nawet na Malcie wiedzą co to jest Dark Ambient. I - wnioskując po nazwie projektu - kojarzą kim był niejaki H. P. Lovecraft. No niesamowite po prostu... Ale cicho sza, starczy tego nabijania się, bo muzyka wbrew pozorom wcale do takich najgorszych nie należy.

Z tego co wiem od samego muzyka, SKY OF YUGGOTH jest jedynym ambientowym projektem pochodzącym z maleńkiej wyspy na południu Europy. Do czegoś to zobowiązuje - jak wypadnie SKY OF YUGGOTH, tak będzie postrzegana Malta w ambientowym światku. Stwierdzam jednak, że Jo wychodzi z tego wyzwania obronną ręką, bo choć oczywiście nie jest to żadna ambientowa Liga Mistrzów, absolutnie nie ma tu mowy o jakiejś porażce czy kompromitacji. Już na pierwszy rzut ucha słychać czego ten maltański sokół słuchał kiedy był mały. Echa Lustmord i niektórych, zwłaszcza starszych produkcji Cold Meat są aż nadto dostrzegalne. Całość jest jednak sklecona z wyczuciem i smakiem. Jak na ambient sporo się w tych czterech dosyć długich utworach dzieje. Jeden jest ciężki i gęsty, dzięki któremu czuję się jakbym był zakuty w lity kamień. Inny pulsuje industrialnymi brudami i pomrukami z których sam Cthulhu na pewno byłby dumny i z uznaniem owinąłby swoją macką prawicę Maltańczyka. Jeszcze inny mami i kusi pozornie ciepłymi i kojącymi dźwiękami, które oczywiście nie są niczym innym jak wyrachowaną grą mającą na celu wciągnąć nieuświadomionego delikwenta w lovecraftowską otchłań.

Sporo się dzieje, ale płycie brakuje trochę własnego charakteru. Album jest trochę zbyt "bezpieczny", podręcznikowy. Wiem, że w przypadku Dark Ambientu wyjątkowo ciężko o innowacje czy naprawdę oryginalne pomysły, ale... warto przynajmniej próbować. Niektórym naprawdę się udaje. Liczę, że na następnych wydawnictwach będzie w tej kwestii lepiej.

Nie zmienia to jednak faktu, że "Transmissions from the Chthonic Depths" to album dość udany. Mroczny i klimatyczny a przecież to w tym gatunku podstawa.

Well, well... Even on Malta people know what Dark Ambient is. And - concluding from the name of the project - they know who H. P. Lovecraft was, I'll be damned. But hush, enough of this tasteless jokes, because music really is not that bad.

As far as I know from the artist, SKY OF YUGGOTH is the only Ambient project on this tiny island in southern Europe. It's very obligating - whole Maltese scene will be perceived and judged only by knowing this one single artist. But here I certify that this challenge turned out to be victorious. Of course it isn't any Ambient Champions League yet, but we absolutely can't talk about a failure or shame. On the first glimpse of an ear, you can figure out what this maltese falcon have listened most often, when he was a kid. Echoes of Lustmord and some, especially older CMI acts are really noticeable. Whole thing though is created with taste and feeling. These four tracks are quite diversed (as for Ambient music). One is dark and massive, thanks to which I feel like stucked in solid stone. The other pulsates with industrial dirts and murmurs - while listening to them even Cthulhu himself would be very proud and probably in recognition of this he would like to shake Jo's hand with his tentacle. Another track deludes and seduces with apparently warm and soothing sounds which of course aren't nothing else then tricky game in order to suck listener into Lovecraftian abyss.

Many things happen, but from time to time I feel lack of some uniquity. This album is a little too "safe", like from ambient "manual". Sure thing, in Dark Ambient it's very hard to find any innovations or original ideas, but hey... it's worth to try. Some really can make it. I hope things will improve in this matter in the future.

It doesn't change the fact that "Transmissions from the Chthonic Depths" is good album. Dark and gloomy - this is essential in this genre.
