![]() The Child Readers tread the implied ground that lies somewhere between a music heard far off and a music finally pulled together. Active since 2000, Loren Chasse and Jason Honea, The Child Readers, present the disparate dualities of metaphysical improvisation and meticulous composition in their otherworldly recordings, an adventurous & dense take on art-pop songwriting unheard since the heyday of Cherry Red and 4AD (imagine Eyeless in Gaza nicking from the Xiu Xiu or Richard Youngs songbook). We would like invite you to interview with Jason Honea. Enjoy! ![]() ![]() Jason: It just got compulsive really quick. records and music were the only things worth earing or so it seemd as a pre teen. My heart moved my head! 2. When did you decide to do THE CHILD READERS with Loren Chasse? Please tell us something about this project? Is this your most important band which you are involved? J: We did our first bits in Holland in 99'. We called the song "Fire Puzzle" and then another piece came about when we were home again ...it got called "When You get a Gift". The CRs are very important to me but there are other things I'm doing that in their moments are just as important. The CRs offers however way more than most and could really develope even more into something else. 3. Could you describe for our readers the latest THE CHILD READERS album “Music Heard Far Off” released by Soft Abuse? For me it’s the perfect blend of intimate psychedelia, improvisation, free folk, weird industrial and lo-fi. How is your description? J: What you just described works. I like to think of it as being something my old girlfriend would have turned me onto when I was 17 and completely in another space musicilly. 4. Are you happy with co-operation with Soft Abuse? Will you release next THE CHILD READERS album on this label? Can you reccomend us some bands worth attention? J: I'm very happy with Soft Abuse but as of yet there's no new recording or even anything in the works. The Animal Things are pretty great. The Legend ! too. 5. What's happening with The KNIT SEPARATES? What kind of music do you do with this band?. Are you still an active member in THE FRANCISCAN HOBBIES (one of Glenn Donaldson's side-projects)? J: Knit Separates hasn't existed for quite a while now. There's stuff that was never released but who knows. The KSs. did shit pop done flat down. What I'm doing with Benjamin Aman from Polder is sort of a nickle and dime KSs. in a sense... As best I know, I only did a tiny bit on a couple of tracks with regards to the Franciscan Hobbies. ![]() 6. Some time ago you mentioned me about your new solo project: SHITTY LISTENER. Until this day I heard not music... Please describe us this side of your artistic creativity. J: It's basically what I bring to the Child Readers though it evolves all the time in ways that get confusing for me. Ideally it should just be a 'capella but I keep on making new friends that get in the way. 7. Why did you deceide to move from the US to Europe? What are you doing in Berlin? Please tell us about those main differences between that place were you lived earlier and your new home? Do you have plans to live in Germany for a long time? Maybe you'll want to move back to States one day? J: I moved here to do a teacher training. I'm a school teacher in Potsdam. I have a family here now too. Yeah, I'd like to mover back at sometime. Differnces? No Ocean thus no strand, that it's not dry enough, my family of friends don't live here, etc. 8. You live in Germany, Loren Chasse (the other CHILD READERS member) lives in the US. Does the distance cause problems for THE CHILD READERS? Do you exchange music by post with each other and re-record it? J: The problem with the distance is that it impedes a couple of things that I really use to love....things like weekends on the coast, recording....other stuff as well. We exchange music via the mail or we load each other up with recordings when we see each other. Honestly, I think it helps the band living with the distance because you can't really tell anymore how any of the stuff we did together at any time in the last few years came together. 9. Is your music kind of escape from reality for you? When you compose, do you try to forget about your real world problems and dive away, directly into your imagination? J: No, I feel pretty comfortable with where I am. The music just makes it all the better. 10. Do you know something about independent music in Poland? You live in Berlin, very near to Poland border... Could my country could be interesting for you in any way? J: I really don't know anything about Polish independent music. Invite me to come so I can check it out. Do it soon!!! 11. Could you recomend any interesting bands, which are able to create similar aura to this which we can find in your music? J: Sorry, I don't... wait, Veronica Lake, Dirt, The 14 Iced Bears would be a gentle introduction. 12. What plans for future do you have? When can we expect new songs recorded by Jason Honea? And where can we look for informations about recordings your bands and related projects? J: Rural Fauna will be putting out the new Shitty Listener, "Crying Sweater" ep. There's also the new "James Bloodbeard" coming out on Rural Fauna: Jason Honea, Steven R. Smith, Brain Lucas, Mark Williams... 13. Thank you very much for your time and patience... Would you like add anything? J: Invite me to Poland! Tomasz Borowski info: www.3acrefloor.com www.myspace.com/thechildreaders www.softabuse.com ![]() ![]() |
